Nutrition Module — Environmental Psychology

Preparing your Environment

Willpower runs out, environmental design does not. How to adapt your pantry for success without isolating your family.

The 20-Second Rule (Environmental Psychology)

Post-surgical willpower is depleted quickly when there are visual stimuli at home. The rule states that if a simple carbohydrate (cookies, bread, sweets) requires more than 20 seconds of physical effort to obtain (e.g. using a stool to reach a hidden drawer), the brain turns off the catabolic impulse.

The Hierarchy of Protein Tolerance (Months 1 to 6)

The bariatric stomach needs to relearn how to process solid proteins. If you skip steps, you will experience vomiting or painful "blockages".

Theoretical Phase Safe Protein Source Risk of Gastric Blockage
Phase 1 (Blended Purees) Steamed white fish, Scrambled eggs (very soft). Low (Very soft fiber)
Phase 2 (Soft Foods) Ground chicken, Flaked tuna, Salmon. Medium (Requires chewing 30 times)
Phase 3 (Rubber) Baked pork, Chicken chunks, Beef (tenderloin). High (Requires cooking in broth)
Phase 4 (Restricted) Fibrous red meats (Flank, dry pork cuts, direct grilling). Severe (Avoid first 4 months)

Culinary Engineering (Cooking without Gastric Lipids)

Active AirFryer

Eliminates saturated oils that slide down to the intestine causing "Dumping". Use it preferably with indirect steam so as not to dehydrate the chicken protein.

Sous-Vide

The post-surgical gold standard. Cooking vacuum-packed meats in controlled water breaks down 100% of the collagen network, making a chicken breast melt in the mouth.

Bariatric Batch Prep

Dedicate Sundays to preparing portions in 2 and 4-ounce Tupperwares. Weigh them raw. When you come home hungry from work, the brain will choose the ready-made tupper over a processed craving.

Liquids / Solids Separation Rule

In the anatomy of a healthy stomach, liquids push the solids. In your new surgery, this erases the food bolus and empties the stomach prematurely, preventing absorption and causing pain. Unbreakable rule at home: Stop drinking liquids 30 minutes before eating, and wait 30 minutes after swallowing to drink again.
